During the 1800s the majority of craftsmen carried their tools in wooden tool chests. The quality and style of these tool chests varied depending on how rich or successful the particular tradesman was and they varied from open topped to closed. Although you could find out a lot about checking inside the craftsman’s tool chest it was also possible to find out a great deal about him from looking at the chest itself.
The more ornate wooden tool chests that were embellished with decorative corner plates and finely wrought handles would tell you that it belonged to a medical professional rather than someone who worked with his hands. The purpose of the chest apart from holding the doctor’s tools will also have been used to indicate the professional’s education and standing in the community.
This is not to say that a master carpenter would not have used a similarly well-designed tool chest. In fact, many carpenters found it necessary to use elaborate wooden tool chests. These chests would have been designed with multiple small drawers that were felt lined. They could hold smaller items such as nails that would be required to be kept very ordered and separate from the rest of the tools. The larger part of the chest would be designed to be able to hold tools such as chisels, planes and other items that depend on being properly stored to keep the edges sharp and undamaged.
Wooden tool chests were not only designed for the worker. Smaller tool chests have been designed with numerous small and thin drawers to cater for a needle worker. The drawers would be used to contain threads, thimbles, needles and pins. In the top section you might find a couple of removable trays that might hold scissors, patterns, work in progress and other slightly larger items. The removable tray would be used to give the owner access to the work that was being done, take it from the chest while working and then quickly pack it away when finished.
Rather than being simple, one size fits all types of units, wooden tool chests were very much designed with specific purposes or tasks in mind. This design has continued on today and there are still quality manufacturers who have been able to provide tradesmen and hobbyists with the perfect type of specialist storage chests to cater precisely for their needs.
Many shy away from such things as it would require them to build a whole new building, but today you can get
